By Conrad Prabhu — To the untrained eye, perspectives and artist’s renditions of the underwater hotel mooted by its promoters can conjure up images of spaceships and extraterrestrial colonies inhabited by aliens. Revolutionary in design, the patent-protected concept and closely-held technology are quite unlike anything that the hotel and tourism industry has ever countenanced before.
Thus when conceptual designs were first unveiled at The Hotel Show in Dubai last May, it was one of the attention-grabbing highlights of the expo. BIG InvestConsult, a Swiss-based consulting, engineering, and brokerage firm, behind the Water Discus Hotel (WDH) earned lavish coverage in the print and online media, and much esteem in the eyes of international property investors looking for innovative, leading-edge ventures.
Adding to their prestige in the region was a pact granting Drydocks World, the Dubai-based shipbuilding and repair giant, and its sister company Maritime World, exclusive contractor status in the construction of all underwater hotels and related ventures promoted by BIG InvestConsult in the Gulf region.
Speaking exclusively to the Observer, the President and CEO of BIG InvestConsult, Bogdan Gutkowski, says the Sultanate with its almost magical aquatic attributes, is ideally suited to host a Water Discus Hotel. Preliminary analysis of possible locations around the Gulf has underlined the suitability of possible locations along the Omani coast for the construction of what would be the Sultanate’s first underwater hotel.
Yes, after internal analysis, Oman was defined as one of those locations where the Water Discus Hotel could be implemented. BIG InvestConsult AG is responsible for the development of the Water Discus Hotel. Currently, we are searching for local partners in Oman who are able to provide us with their support in selecting the most convenient area for the hotel,” Gutkowski said.
Conceived and developed by Polish-based Deep Ocean Technology (DOT), the Water Discus Hotel model is truly groundbreaking. The main structure consists of two components: an underwater residential disc and an above water leisure disc with a couple of satellite extensions. Together, they offer guests the opportunity of a holiday amid the magnificence of the ocean environment, complete with vibrant marine life, an abundance of coral reefs, and the tropical warmth of the underwater world.
The pair of discs are connected to three sturdy legs that rest on the seafloor, while a shaft in the centre has a lift and stairway that connects the discs. A standard model of a Water Discus Hotel envisages 21 luxuriously appointed rooms located some 10 metres below the water surface. Huge windows offer stunning views of the surrounding underwater flora and fauna.
In the event of a maritime emergency, the underwater disc can surface immediately, while rescue boats that are always on hand, can be pressed into service. A helicopter pad on the top of the above-water disc can be used to ferry guests or crew to safety if needed.
Importantly, a project of this scale and appeal, says Gutkowski, could have hugely beneficial ramifications for Oman’s tourism industry. Today, we are aware of the huge global interest in the Water Discus project. We expect the Water Discus Hotel will arouse great interest in the media as well as among the tourists, when it will be constructed. In the opinion of the marketing specialists of BIG InvestConsult AG, the Water Discus Hotel may become a symbol or signature of the city, region or country where it is built.”
The President & CEO further noted: For sure, it will be add value to the surrounding landscape, because of its unique architectural design. We sincerely hope that the Water Discus Hotel location and construction could be a part of Oman's tourism strategy in promoting the country as a really unique leisure place.”
BIG InvestConsult’s Water Discus-style ventures, Gutkowski explains, have been conceived to ensure that the marine environment is not compromised in any way. Oman has been chosen precisely because of its natural underwater life. Of course, the exact location of the Water Discus Hotel will be a considerable distance from coral reefs in order to safeguard them from any impact. BIG Invest Group is experienced in the delivery of investments with respect for the natural environment. We are experts in this and we take care of environmental issues with the greatest attention.”
In fact, a proposed Water Discus Hotel project in the Sultanate will serve as a showcase of Oman’s spectacular marine wealth, he stresses. What is important is that the Water Discus Hotel will make it possible for all guests (even those who do not go diving) to observe life in an Animal Coral Garden (that will be created around the underwater disc of the hotel). The WDH will be equipped with a Diving Centre (located in the bottom disc) as well as other equipment for marine life observation, for example, three-person submarine vessels that enable (non-diving) hotel guests to travel underwater a few miles from the hotel and admire the natural underwater environment. WDH will also be a place for diving courses, starting with the swimming pool on the sundeck. Indeed, the Water Discus Hotel will be a fantastic showcase of Oman's living marine treasure,” he added.
Underlining BIG InvestConsult’s commitment to the environment, he said the company was in the process of putting together an international programme for coral reef restoration and protection. As part of this initiative, the concept of the Water Discus Hotel will be suitably modified into an underwater lab to serve as a base for studies of the coastal marine environment.
The offshore coastal water laboratories will be located in 10 different places all around the world and used by scientists of various countries in their daily work. A role for scientists and international students exchanges is envisaged in this programme. We have a plan to work on this issue also with the GCC countries. I believe deeply Oman with its coral reef treasure could be one of the countries involved in this project as well.”
Asked for a timeline for the implementation of the Water Discus Hotel project in Oman, Gutkowski stated: The project is still in the conceptual stage. However, we have planned to find an exact location within 3-4 months. Then we will start to develop the project and look for a co-investor.”
